PROJECT SUMMARY

The harm caused by gambling impacts people and communities in many different ways, but poker machine gambling continues to be the single largest contributor to gambling harm, resulting in losses of more than $12 billion every year.

Impact Fund: Supporting Our Partners - Alliance for Gambling Reform
Tony Mohr, Executive Director from the Alliance for Gambling Reform discusses the Alliance's progress so far and the next steps for reform.

Over the last three years, the Alliance for Gambling Reform has made significant progress on its campaign against poker machines. More than 50% of AFL clubs have exited the pokies industry, and both Coles and Woolworths announced their divestment last year, forgoing billions in revenue.

The Alliance’s Pokies Play You’ campaign has played a central role in forcing these companies to decide between their profits and their reputations, reducing the power of the industry and creating the conditions for reform.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The Alliance has achieved significant progress through its campaign for divestment from poker machines. Since receiving funding from the Impact Fund in 2017, the Alliance has played a central role in changing industry practice related to pokies in the AFL, as well as in the divestment announcements from both Woolworths and Coles.

The Alliance now hopes to leverage the shutdown of poker machines as a result of Covid-19 in their campaign for reform.

Profile of Alliance for Gambling Reform

Alliance for Gambling Reform

The Alliance for Gambling Reform is a collaboration of organisations with a shared concern about the demonstrably harmful aspects of gambling and its normalisation in Australian culture. The Alliance recognises gambling addiction as a public health issue, and believes there is no acceptable level of harm from gambling products. The purpose of the Alliance is to prevent and reduce the harm caused by gambling through public health policy reforms.
