PROJECT SUMMARY

The world of philanthropy is new to most First Nations peoples in Australia. The scarcity of First Nations people involved in philanthropy either as staff, or sitting on foundation Boards, leads to the inhibiting factor of isolation for many.

As in many other sectors, when First Nations peoples are scarce and isolated it becomes more difficult to develop relationships with each other as well as First Nations communities more generally. People burn out and we lose them.

Blak Loungeroom will be an opportunity whereby these workers or trustees can communicate regularly to discuss their issues and mutual interests, gain support for initiatives and be a place for non-First Nations people in philanthropy to come for help.

Read our interview with John Harding, Executive Officer of the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-led philanthropic fund, Koondee Woonga-gat Toor-rong.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The Blak Loungeroom will provide a space controlled and censored by First Nations people who will control the agenda, the guests, and the power for a change. This is a long overdue and needed investment in First Nations-led philanthropy in Australia.
