AWOV was established as a support organisation for Afghan women predominately in the Dandenong Council area where the largest number of Afghans have settled, organising events to bring together an ever-increasing number of newly arrived Afghan women from various ethnic backgrounds, many of whom are widows, often isolated and marginalised, often illiterate in their own language and with little or no English.
AMOV works to support and strengthen Afghan women whilst fostering friendship and cultural networks not even possible in Afghanistan. AWOV provides a bridge between Afghan and Australian culture and also links Australian and Afghan women. Practically, AWOV provides varied skill training, English language classes, community excursions, information sessions and Afghan festive celebrations. For many newly arrived Afghan women, AMOV has become an organisation providing comfort, security and empowerment. It also acts as a go-between with governments, advising decision makers of current circumstances, needs and solutions related to Afghan women living in Victoria. The organisation is supported by a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers who play an active part of the organisation.
