Australian Geographic Society

The Australian Geographic Society is the charitable arm of Australian Geographic, dedicated to supporting conservation, scientific research, exploration and environmental education across Australia. For almost four decades, the Society has used the reach and trusted storytelling of Australian Geographic to connect Australians with the natural world and turn that engagement into practical support for people and projects making a difference. Australia faces an escalating biodiversity crisis, with habitat loss, invasive species, climate change and other pressures threatening many of our unique species and ecosystems. Australian Geographic Society is uniquely placed to respond by combining direct funding for conservation with powerful communication, bringing important projects and their outcomes to a large national audience.

Their current priorities include supporting evidence-based conservation and threatened-species recovery; restoring degraded habitats; strengthening Indigenous-led conservation; encouraging citizen science; and backing innovative research and practical solutions with the potential for lasting impact. Their flagship Awards for Nature program provides substantial grants to outstanding conservation projects selected through a competitive assessment and expert review process. In 2026, AGS awarded $150,000 to five projects, supporting work ranging from seed conservation and Christmas beetle monitoring to marine restoration, migratory shorebird conservation and Indigenous-led landscape restoration. Since 2024 Australian Geographic Society have disbursed $400,000 through that program alone.

External funding will enable Australian Geographic Society to increase its investment in high-impact projects, leveraging the strength of the Australian Geographic brand to communicate both the issues and the solutions to a broad general audience, informing people and empowering them to get involved.
