At Burke and Beyond, we believe adults with disability deserve every opportunity to build the life they choose—including the opportunity to work, contribute and be recognised for their abilities.
Too many young people with intellectual disability leave school wanting to work but without the time, tailored learning and practical experience they need. Without the right pathway, they can lose confidence and become isolated or disengaged.
Burke and Beyond was established in 1990 by parents seeking better post-school opportunities for their children. Our four-year, curriculum-based Next Step Program supports people aged 18 and over to build skills, confidence and independence through meaningful, self-directed learning. Participants set their own goals and choose what they want to develop, supported through flexible timetables, small groups and an encouraging social environment.
Learning includes independent living, cooking, travel, communication, advocacy, consent, health and wellbeing, digital skills, volunteering and work readiness. We also partner with TAFE and neighbourhood houses to provide accredited and pre-accredited learning.
Our 115 trainees and graduates build practical skills, friendships and stronger community connections. Programs provide real-world experience and pathways to volunteering and employment, with graduates gaining meaningful jobs that match their interests and abilities.
Our priorities are to create more employment pathways, grow our social enterprises and connect with inclusive employers. Funding for an accessible, participant-designed website will help young adults and families discover opportunities and connect with training, employment and community life. It will also help us reach employers and partners who can open doors.
