Fiji Book Drive is a registered charity in both Australia and Fiji dedicated to improving literacy by providing carefully curated library collections to schools and kindergartens across Fiji.
Founded in 2012 by English teacher Fiona Lüth, the organisation began with a simple idea: every child deserves access to quality books, regardless of where they live. What started in a Melbourne garage has grown into a respected literacy charity working in long-term partnership with schools throughout Fiji.
Unlike one-off book donation programs, Fiji Book Drive provides carefully curated library collections tailored to each school’s enrolment, year levels and literacy needs. Every book is individually reviewed before being sent, ensuring it is age-appropriate, culturally suitable and in excellent condition. Where possible, collections also include books in English, iTaukei (Bauan Fijian) and Fijian Hindi, supporting literacy in both local and national languages.
Since its founding, Fiji Book Drive has:
- Delivered 459,513 books
- Supported 329 schools and kindergartens
- Built long-term partnerships with schools across Fiji
- Reached schools in some of Fiji’s most remote communities, including locations accessible only by foot, horse or boat. During one school visit, the team crossed a river 36 times to reach a remote school, illustrating the commitment required to ensure children everywhere have access to books.
Books are sourced through generous donations from publishers, schools, families and corporate partners before being carefully sorted, reviewed and packed by volunteers in Melbourne. They are then transported to Fiji through freight partnerships, where schools collect the books and take them back to their communities.
