Organisation Summary

Across remote Fiji, a lack of basic ear health education means treatable conditions routinely go unnoticed until they cause lasting harm. Fiji has no formal school screening program to catch hearing impairment in children, so conditions easily caught elsewhere often go undetected for years. Chronic ear infections and untreated hearing loss are directly linked to speech and language delays, and the educational setbacks that follow a child through school and beyond. Without early intervention, a simple, treatable problem becomes a lifelong disadvantage.

Helping Ears was founded by husband and wife team Robyn and Steven, both experienced hearing care professionals, after a trip to Fiji revealed this gap firsthand. Not every patient needs a hearing aid, many are treated on the spot for infection, wax buildup, or other manageable conditions. For those who do, we restore unwanted hearing aids to a new condition, giving someone with no local access to devices fully upcycled hearing technology, while keeping working devices out of landfill.

Since our first visit in 2023, we’ve screened over 2,000 patients across Fiji, children and adults alike, with approximately 50% requiring intervention. We provide ongoing monitoring, not one-off care, because these communities have no other access to follow-up.

However, the need already outpaces what our small volunteer team can deliver. We need your support to fund more visits each year, train local doctors and health workers to sustain care between trips and build our team’s capacity for more complex cases. Every dollar closes the gap between hearing loss and a person’s future.
