Organisation Summary

For 60,000 years Australian indigenous peoples have maintained conservation and land management practices. This makes indigenous peoples the oldest continuing culture on the planet with many desert peoples only coming into contact with the modern world in the last few decades. This ancient wisdom and environmental stewardship was disrupted by colonisation and the Indigenous Desert Alliance reconnects the desert by bringing desert mob together.

The Indigenous Desert Alliance is an Indigenous controlled, member based organisation that plays a vital role in keeping the desert connected and building resilience for desert ranger programs. They are focused on working with members and partners to ensure that Indigenous people are enabled to collaboratively manage Australia’s desert country and through this, to realise their social, cultural, environmental and economic aspirations.

They do this through:

  • facilitating opportunities for Indigenous land managers across the desert to come together to speak with one voice for desert country
  • strengthening connections between desert groups through maintaining a vibrant information network
  • providing capacity strengthening support for rangers and their organisations to enhance the outcomes for the Indigenous land management sector in the desert
  • managing critical landscape scale collaborative projects with members across the desert

Led by elders, indigenous led conservation and land management restores biodiversity to country and assists in abating the intense impact of climate change on the desert and its peoples. The work of the Indigenous Desert Alliance contributes to reduction in wildfires, restoration of water for wildlife, safeguarding from feral pests and all while keeping culture strong.
