Organisation Summary

Legacy was founded in 1923 on a promise made in the trenches of World War I: that the families of those who did not come home would be looked after. More than a century later, that promise remains their purpose. Legacy is dedicated to supporting the families of veterans who have lost their life or health in service, ensuring that no spouse, partner or child is left to face grief, hardship or isolation alone.

Legacy honour that commitment through practical, long-term support. For families in crisis, this can mean immediate financial assistance or help navigating the entitlements and disability services they need but cannot readily access. For others, it means monthly luncheons and outings for widows who would otherwise spend their later years isolated, holiday camps for children processing grief, and social outings such as bowling, art classes or a concert for adults with intellectual disability whose parent was lost or incapacitated in service.

A dedicated Legatee or community service worker stays in contact with each family for as long as they need it, whether that means arranging a personal alarm so a widow can live safely and independently, marking a milestone like a centenarian’s birthday, or simply checking in as circumstances change. It is this ongoing, personal relationship, not a single intervention, that lets support move with a family across decades.

Legacy’s mission is to strengthen resilience, create opportunity, and ensure the impacts of military service do not determine a family’s security, standing or future.
