Second Chances

Second Chances is a South Australian not-for-profit volunteer organisation dedicated to supporting individuals, children, and families whose lives have been impacted by the justice system, domestic and family violence, and homelessness. For more than two decades, they have worked alongside some of the community’s most vulnerable people, providing practical assistance, advocacy, emotional support, and opportunities for positive change.

Their services focus on supporting people in prison, children and families affected by parental incarceration, victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, and individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. They recognise that these circumstances can have profound and long-lasting impacts on children’s development, education, mental health, family relationships, and overall wellbeing.

Through a range of innovative and custom-designed programs, Second Chances helps children and families overcome barriers, build resilience, and create pathways to brighter futures. Programs provide practical assistance such as emergency relief, educational support, transport, household essentials, and connection to specialist services. They also deliver mentoring, family support, wellbeing initiatives, and community engagement opportunities that strengthen protective factors and reduce social isolation.

A significant focus of their work is supporting children who have a parent in prison. These children often experience stigma, trauma, disrupted family relationships, financial hardship, and poor educational outcomes. Second Chances provide targeted support that helps maintain positive family connections, promotes emotional wellbeing, and ensures children have access to opportunities that enable them to thrive.

By taking a holistic, strengths-based approach, Second Chances work with individuals and families to address immediate needs while supporting long-term stability and independence.
