Te Rongo Mauri Ki Tawhiti is a South East Queensland based charity dedicated to empowering Māori and Pacific Island rangatahi through culture, sport, leadership and community connection.
Founded through a desire to reconnect young people to identity, belonging and purpose, Te Rongo Mauri Ki Tawhiti delivers culturally grounded experiences that strengthen wellbeing, confidence and resilience both on and off the field. Through rugby league, wānanga, haka, waiata, mentoring and community engagement, they create safe spaces where rangatahi can reconnect to who they are, where they come from and the strengths they carry within them.
Te Rongo Mauri Ki Tawhiti programmes support young people aged 6–25, particularly those experiencing social, cultural and financial barriers to participation. They work closely with whānau (family), volunteers, coaches, schools and community organisations to provide opportunities that foster leadership, whakawhanaungatanga (connection), discipline and positive wellbeing outcomes.
Te Rongo Mauri Ki Tawhiti currently operates across South East Queensland while also facilitating cultural and sporting connections with Aotearoa New Zealand through tournaments, development opportunities and cultural exchange experiences.
Since establishment, the organisation has been built largely through voluntary effort and community support. As demand for Te Rongo Mauri Ki Tawhiti programmes continues to grow, they are focused on strengthening governance, operational sustainability and organisational capacity to ensure they can continue delivering meaningful and lasting impact for both rangatahi and wider community.
