The Water Well Project

The Water Well Project is an award-winning charity that improves the health and wellbeing of communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds by improving their health literacy (2023 Winner Victorian Public Healthcare Award for Excellence in Culturally Diverse Health).

Our core activity is the provision of free, interactive, community-based, health education sessions delivered by volunteer healthcare professionals across Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

The Water Well Project utilises a community-centric model by working closely with refugee and migrant support organisations. Sessions are delivered upon requests from community groups and co-designed alongside community partners. This means that sessions are tailored to the needs of each community group and delivered in a culturally safe manner.

Since 2011, TWWP has delivered almost 2,000 health education sessions with over 29,000 CALD community participants from refugee, migrant and asylum seeker backgrounds across VIC, NSW and TAS. Sessions have spanned over 60 health topics and been delivered in over 40 languages, with our base of over 300 active healthcare professionals (namely doctors, nurses, medical students and pharmacists) sharing their valuable time and expertise. Sessions empower participants with the health knowledge and skills to navigate the complex Australian health system to take charge of their physical and mental wellbeing, while volunteer healthcare professionals gain cultural competence and understanding of the experiences of CALD communities in accessing healthcare, leading to improved understandings and better patient care within the system.
