Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring (WBYM)is a grassroots, volunteer-driven not-for-profit organisation transforming opportunities for regional, rural and remote (RRR) young people across Western Australia. We believe every young person, no matter where they live, deserves to feel supported, valued, and connected.
Throughflexible, school-based mentoring, WBYM builds confidence, resilience, wellbeing, and aspiration in secondary students navigating adolescence in geographically and socially isolated communities.
Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring (WBYM) is a place-based mentoring association with adult mentors supporting Year 7-10/12 DHS students in Regional, Rural and Remote (RRR) WA. WBYM runs in schools and is all inclusive, so no students fall through the gap, with the support of school staff. Mentors (from outside the community) email their mentee a minimum one email per week.
Face-to-face opportunities are offered, other forms of contact allowed with parent permission. The program is flexible, cost neutral for mentors and ongoing. Mentors/mentees remain matched for as long as the student is at the school and the mentor remains in the program. Training and ongoing support is provided to mentors/mentees, along with support to participating schools. Feedback from all parties is collected annually, a full evaluation in 2018 demonstrated great benefits to mentees, mentors, parents/caregivers, schools, communities and regions.
WBYM is volunteer run driven by passion and care. Dedicated, highly respected mentors volunteer their time, the majority participate for many years. Our diverse, passionate board are also volunteers. A fully funded annual camp brings students together for extended opportunities and social interaction.
