The John Pierce Centre (JPC) stands as a cornerstone of support and advocacy for the Deaf Community in Victoria, embodying a rich history of service and empowerment. Established in 1936 by Fr. John Pierce, the centre initially focused on spiritual and educational needs, marking Victoria’s first dedicated chaplaincy for the deaf.
Over the decades, it has evolved into a multifaceted organisation, offering a spectrum of services from education and family support to advocacy and pastoral care.
Located strategically on High St, Prahran, the JPC ensures accessibility for all, emphasizing inclusivity and community engagement. Its comprehensive approach includes crucial initiatives like awareness programs and enriching lives of deaf people beyond immediate support.
Our Vision - To promote community through education, spiritual, and family support.
Our Values:
Inclusivity - Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing people, their families, our volunteers, staff and other stakeholders feel respected, supported, and values
Integrity - Being honest, ethical, and consistent with our core values in both our words and actions
Compassion - Showing kindness and empathy in our relationships with the Deaf community, our partners and other stakeholders
Collaboration - Contributing our time and skills in working with other individuals and organisations to support the overall wellbeing of the Deaf community to Victoria
Accountability - Being responsible for our actions, behaviours, performance, and decisions at an individual and organisational level
Project Summary
Our organisation is dedicated to enhancing community services and outreach through various initiatives, including our weekly Sunday Mass. To improve the quality of our presentations and ensure a more engaging experience for our attendees, we have recently been gifted a high-quality projector by Epson. This donation is a significant step towards upgrading our audio-visual capabilities. However we still need assistance in installation and the sourcing of projector screen
Central to our approach is the integration of accessibility features to ensure inclusivity for all participants. By utilising projectors, we will enable simultaneous access to Auslan interpretation and PowerPoint presentations during each session. This dual presentation format will facilitate greater understanding and engagement among attendees, including those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Project Outcomes
The Access Auslan Project aims to substantially enhance the quality and inclusivity of our weekly Sunday Mass presentations. The key results expected from this project include:
- Improved Presentation Quality: The installation of the Epson projector, alongside the procurement of a suitable projector screen, will elevate the visual clarity of our presentations. Attendees will benefit from sharp, clear images that make PowerPoint slides and other visual aids more effective and engaging.
- Enhanced Accessibility: By integrating Auslan interpretation with the projected content, we will ensure that our services are accessible to attendees who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This dual presentation format will allow for simultaneous viewing of both the Auslan interpreter and the PowerPoint slides, promoting a more inclusive environment.
- Increased Engagement: With high-quality audio-visual support, attendees will experience a more immersive and interactive session. This will not only help in better understanding the content but also in maintaining their attention and participation throughout the Mass and other community workshops that we hold.
The impact of the Access Auslan Project will be multi-faceted, extending beyond immediate presentation improvements to fostering long-term benefits for our community:
- Inclusivity and Equality: By incorporating Auslan interpretation and high-quality visuals, we will address accessibility barriers for individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This initiative aligns with our commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that all community members can fully participate and benefit from our services.
- Enhanced Community Engagement: The improved presentation quality and accessibility features will create a more welcoming and engaging environment. This will likely increase attendance and participation in our Sunday Mass, strengthening community bonds and encouraging a greater sense of belonging among all attendees.
- Set a Precedent: Successfully implementing this project will set a positive example for other organizations in our community, demonstrating the value and impact of prioritising accessibility and technological enhancements in public services.
