Established in 1951, Endeavour Foundation is dedicated to supporting people with intellectual disability (individuals) so they may live fulfilling lives at home, at work and within the community. We partner with individuals, their families and caregivers to deliver tailored supports that address their personal needs, goals and interests.
Our mission is to improve opportunities and make possibilities a reality for individuals with intellectual disability by removing barriers and championing inclusivity. To achieve this, we offer choice in supportive services and programs that include learning and lifestyle hubs, supported employment, specialist disability accommodation, supported independent living, individualised support, and advocacy.
Our combined Keon Park Social Enterprise worksite and Learning and Lifestyle hub in Thomastown, Victoria currently supports 177 local individuals with intellectual disability. The worksite offers supported employment, training and work experience, while the hub offers educational, recreational and social programs. Our person-centred services focus on enhancing individuals’ opportunities, empowering them to develop skills, build confidence, gain independence and reach their goals through meaningful work and engaging learning experiences.
Project Summary
Endeavour Foundation seeks funding to build a new, fully accessible bathroom facility for individuals with diverse abilities engaged in meaningful employment and education opportunities at our combined Keon Park supportive services site. The build will comply with current building standards to provide an essential modern, safe and accessible facility that meets the needs of current and future supported individuals.
The existing ‘disabled toilet’ facility, constructed over 15 years ago, falls short of current bathroom accessibility standards, hindering supported individuals who use mobility aids from accessing and manoeuvring within the space comfortably. With three individuals using wheelchairs and eight others relying on mobility walkers at this site, the existing toilet fails to meet their personal needs and independence levels. Some require assistance from staff to access and utilise the toilet, compromising their privacy and dignity. Our proposed project will address these shortcomings and will feature a compliant door, adequate internal space, improved supports, proper drainage, and updated fixtures and fittings.
Funds will be allocated to contribute to the total project, starting with designing the bathroom and obtaining the necessary approvals, followed by the building works. The new bathroom build will include the construction of the walls and ceiling, waterproofing, plumbing, electrics and painting. It will be finished with modern, accessible cabinetry, toilet, grab rails, flooring and door, ensuring an inclusive environment for individuals accessing supportive services at our combined Keon Park Social Enterprise worksite and Learning and Lifestyle hub.
Project Outcomes
We aim to enhance the accessibility and useability of our combined Keon Park supportive services site by building a new, fully accessible and compliant bathroom facility to specifically support individuals with diverse needs and abilities now and in the future.
The following assessment methods will be applied to measure the impact of this project and if we have achieved our goal.
1. Accessibility audits - Conduct routine accessibility audits of the bathroom facility to ensure ongoing compliance and to ensure it continues to effectively meet the needs and abilities of supported individuals onsite.
2. User feedback - Collect feedback from supported individuals who utilise the new bathroom to determine their overall user experience and satisfaction of the facility in meeting their needs, gathering their views of enhanced access and movability, independence and privacy, comfortability and confidence.
3. Usage data - Monitor if and how often the bathroom is being utilised by supported individuals who do and don’t rely on mobility aids to assess the new facility’s enhanced accessibility, usability and appeal.
4. Observations - Observe how the bathroom facility is being utilised to assess its effectiveness by tracking the number of supported individuals who rely on mobility aids accessing the bathroom independently and confidently without the assistance of onsite support staff.
5. Staff feedback - Collect feedback from onsite support staff on their interactions with supported individuals who access and utilise the new bathroom facility, gathering any eyewitness accounts and experiences and if they identify opportunities for further improvement.
