Douglas Vale is a unique, volunteer-run historic homestead and vineyard, created 150 years ago. As a registered charity and not-for-profit organization, we are dedicated to preserving Port Macquarie's rich history. We take pride in producing exceptional wines from our 1-acre vineyard, including the famous Portabella grown from 150-year-old Isabella wine stock, along with Villard Blanc and Chambourcin varieties.

Our heritage museum, housed in the oldest timber building in the Hastings region, offers free tours where visitors can explore the magnificent grounds, which include an orchard, ornamental ponds, a cottage, and rose and vegetable gardens. The homestead and outbuildings are classified by the National Trust of Australia and are on the Council's list of heritage sites.

We are access-friendly and offer activities for children. Free wine tastings and purchases are available exclusively at our cellar door, featuring two white wines, a rosé, two reds, and the renowned Isabella Port.

Project Summary

Douglas Vale is nearing the final stages of our latest significant project, ‘The Wine House,’ a versatile small venue planned to host an array of future events for our local community. As part of its completion, we recognize the need for a permanent sound system and stage lighting to elevate the space. This addition will expand our capacity to serve the community by facilitating various occasions, including weddings, wakes, birthdays, and proposed events like a ‘jazz night,’ enriching our offerings and engagement opportunities.

Additionally, the integration of a permanent sound system and stage lighting at ‘The Wine House’ will not only enhance the ambiance and functionality of the venue but also elevate the overall event experience for attendees. With these essential resources in place, we can deliver immersive and memorable occasions that resonate with diverse audiences. Whether it’s live music performances, small theatre productions, or cultural gatherings, our expanded capabilities will enable us to cater to a wide range of interests and preferences within the community. By fostering a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere, we aim to foster greater community connection and participation, making ‘The Wine House’ a highlight of social and cultural enrichment in the region.

Project Outcomes

The planned additions to 'The Wine House', including the installation of a sound system and stage lighting, are set to improve the venue's capabilities and attractiveness. These upgrades will enable us to offer a wider variety of events, from weddings and wakes to birthdays and specialty nights. With superior audio quality and professional-grade lighting, we can deliver a more engaging and enjoyable experience for all attendees, which will help us draw larger crowds and increase revenue, which is important due to us being a non-profit and registered charity.

For the community, the benefits are huge. The upgraded 'Wine House' will serve as a hub for social and cultural activities, providing a high-quality space for performances, celebrations, and community gatherings. The improved sound and lighting will not only enhance the ambiance but also make it possible to host diverse events that appeal to various interests, thus fostering a more vibrant community life. Local artists and performers will have a professional venue to showcase their talents, contributing to the cultural enrichment of the area.

Furthermore, by elevating the standards of our venue, we anticipate attracting visitors from outside the immediate region, which will help boost local tourism and support surrounding businesses. This influx of visitors will contribute to the economic growth of Port Macquarie, making the upgrades a worthwhile investment for both Douglas Vale and the broader community. In summary, these enhancements will ensure that 'The Wine House' becomes a highlight of local culture and economy, benefiting everyone involved.
