Established in 2018, South Sudanese Health Matters Incorporated (SSHMI) is a non-government, nonĀ political, not-for-profit organisation headquartered in Melbourne Australia, that aims to improve access to healthcare services and related education for people in the Lou Ariik area and surrounding communities in South Sudan.
Our mission is to improve the health & life-chances of people living in the Lou Ariik Village and surrounding communities through the implementation of sustainable healthcare initiatives and health education programs, promoting local workforce training and building capacity to deliver these services.
Project Summary
There is currently only one health care clinic in the entire Lou-Ariik village, servicing 360,000 people. Staff receive only the most basic of training, little equipment and insufficient medical supplies. The closest hospital is about four hours away by car or ten hours by foot. The nearest city with an airstrip and a teaching hospital, is nearly a week of walking from Lou Ariik Village. To address this situation, SSHMI are looking to construct and equip a small broad-based medical clinic in the village of Lou-Ariik.
Whist the clinic is under construction, we will employ and arrange training of a small team of medical professionals whose focus will be providing immediate and ongoing health care and support to Lou-Ariik village and its surrounding area. The project build will include solar power, water and sanitation for the clinic and local community.
The delivery of the project will ensure that the community of Lou Ariik will have access to health care year-round whereas currently they are isolated for up to 4 months a year due to monsoonal flooding.
Project Outcomes
The Primary Health Care Clinic will improve the health and well-being of the Lou Ariik community of around 360,000 people by providing access to health care and medicines and maternal health. The anticipated outcome is a reduction in the number of preventable deaths.
