Project Summary

Think Forward is a not-for-profit, participatory policymaking organisation. We research, educate and advocate to enable
intergenerational care and dialogue in policymaking.

Our mission is to facilitate a prosperous and fairer future through transformational change in our economic and tax
systems.

We want to live in a society where intergenerational fairness is centred in policy making. Where no generation is suffering because of unfair age-based policies, and where everyone has the opportunity to live healthy, prosperous, and fulfilling lives no matter which generation they are born into.

We founded Think Forward because Australia’s current economic and tax policies favour the already wealthy over those starting out. Australia’s tax settings are driving intergenerational wealth inequality and making it harder for younger generations to own a home, start a business or get an education.

We also rarely see younger generations involved in economic and tax debates. Economics has become the domain of a smaller and more select group of people. For many young people, the tax system can feel set in stone. Something done to us rather than something we actively participate in, handed down by accountants, lawyers, politicians, lobby groups and academics.

We undertake high-quality research and provide policy advice to add new information and voices to the nation’s economic debates. We convene across government, academia, business and the NGO sector to explore long-term creative solutions to the critical and complex structural policy challenges Australia faces.

We advocate for the change we want to see and educate younger generations on tax and economic systems to equip them with the knowledge and opportunities to participate in economic and tax debates.

Project Outcomes

To address intergenerational inequality and boost participation, we believe the answer lies in a combination of education, advocacy and movement-building with younger generations. We need to change how we talk about tax and the economy. We need a wholescale rethink on how we give young people the information that matters, and involve them in decision-making processes.

We will:
- Increase economic literacy amongst younger generations, with our educational 'Tik Tok Tax' outreach program.
- Give young people the tools they need to advocate for Australia's collective economic wellbeing
- Show politicians that young Australian's are interested and eager to engage with economic policy decision making
- Build a foundation of intergenerational care to overcome the generational warfare that derails progress towards collective wellbeing.
- Use research to fill a gap in knowledge and support decision makers with information about the perspectives of younger people regarding tax and economic reform.

The ultimate outcome is to trigger tax and economic reform for an Australia with an economy that works for all generations.
