Gumala offers a number of programs, which operate from Perth to the Pilbara region in WA, including affordable housing, business and employment support, education, health and wellness and culture/lore programs.
The Gumala Trust is a registered charity, and holds DGR1 status, for its benevolent work with Aboriginal people and communities.
Project Summary
Gumala’s Housing Support Program aims to assist First Nations People who are struggling to secure or retain safe and affordable housing. The Program provides wrap-around support that is designed to meet individual needs and circumstances. Some examples of the type of support available includes, specialist referrals, connecting people with local service providers, support for parents to get kids to school, tenancy support, workshops on understanding tenant rights and responsibilities, help with securing employment, financial capability and resilience building workshops, professional coaching on how to make a savings plan and establish a sustainable budget, and advocacy support.
This project is an expansion of the current Gumala Housing Program to include culturally appropriate Financial Counselling services, to support Gumala families to make better, more informed housing decisions.
The financial counselling support team would offer education on financial literacy, and coaching as well as referrals to relevant agencies for support to break the rental cycle, or simply improve the family’s household circumstances.
Project Outcomes
The Gumala Housing Support Program has been designed to support people to retain and source suitable housing for their needs.
Having access to safe and affordable housing is an issue affecting many Gumala families. To help support Aboriginal people who require assistance to address an urgent housing need, we created our Housing Support Program.
