Project Summary
Justice-involved youth, particularly those from CALD backgrounds, face significant reintegration challenges, including stigma, lack of support, and high risks of reoffending. In Victoria over 40% of young offenders reoffend within 12 months. The Karibu Youth Reintegration Program supports justice-involved CALD youth aged 14-24 who have reintegrated into the community to live independently, make informed decisions, and reduce the risk of reoffending, fostering long-term positive change and enhancing community well-being.
Program Components:
– Intake and Assessment: Youth are referred by justice system professionals or community organizations for a comprehensive assessment.
– Personalized Support Plan: Based on the assessment, a personalized support plan is created. An initial meeting sets goals and expectations.
– Case Management: Regular check-ins help adjust support plans as needed.
– Education and Skill Development: Participants access educational resources, tutoring, and vocational training through collaborations with educational institutions and employers.
– Employment Support: Assistance with resume writing, interview preparation, job searching, and professional development.
– Housing Assistance: Secure stable housing through referrals, rental assistance, and transitional housing options.
– Mental Health Services: Individual counselling sessions and evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioural therapy.
– Life Skills Training: Workshops on budgeting, time management, communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making.
– Community Engagement: Opportunities for community service projects and volunteer activities foster social connections. Peer support groups facilitate positive interactions and mentorship.
The project will cater for up to 20 CALD youth with high needs for a duration of up to 6 months. Evidence suggests that targeted interventions for CALD youth has a disproportionately high positive impact in the CALD community.
Project Outcomes
Faraja Inclusion Agency has developed a robust evaluation framework that includes a weekly questionnaire (which participants can complete on their phones) that assesses the impacts of the expected outcomes and how they link to broader strategic aims. These are complemented by regular check-ins, progress monitoring through measuring data and statistics e.g. academic attendance, course completion rates, as well as feedback from participants, families, and stakeholders.
The expected outcomes and their success measures are:
- Reduced Recidivism: The program aims to significantly lower reoffending rates among participants through ongoing support and guidance. Faraja will track recidivism rates and compare them to baseline data.
- Increased Stability: Participants will achieve greater stability in education, employment, and housing. Success will be measured by monitoring participants' educational engagement, employment status, and housing stability over time.
- Improved Mental Health and Well-being: Access to counselling, therapy, and life skills training will enhance participants' mental health and emotional well-being. Faraja will conduct regular assessments of mental health status and self-reported well-being.
- Enhanced Life Skills and Independence: Participants will develop essential life skills such as budgeting, time management, and decision-making, enabling them to live independently. Faraja has developed an evaluation to measure the flow-on positive impacts of these skills, e.g. holding a job for an extended period suggests good time management skills.
- Increased Community Engagement: Participants will build positive social connections and engage in community service, fostering a sense of belonging. Faraja will track participation in community activities and gather feedback from participants and community members.
