Australians for Mental Health is a national campaign & advocacy organisation, founded by 2010 Australian of the Year Prof. Patrick McGorry, that aims to reshape our country so that mental health and well-being across the whole population can thrive, and challenge the policies, practices and attitudes that exacerbate mental harm.
We are doing that with three key focus areas:
- Engaging with communities to bring people together to identify local mental health and wellbeing needs, and supporting the grassroots leadership, relationships and strategy needed to achieve them;
- Bring together a broad alliance of diverse civil society players (community services, religious, trade union, sport, arts, environment) that share an interest in mental health from different perspectives and craft a shared agenda for structural reform in mental health;
- Build on increasing awareness and concern about mental health issues by adding a focus on the public policy reform questions that need action at a political level.
We value our fierce independence and do not receive government funding.
Project Summary
The ‘National Mental Health Monitor’ is the first-of-its-kind quarterly public opinion poll to support a public discussion of the mental health crisis and create urgency for government action.
The poll helps reveal:
– Australia’s state of mental wellbeing in real time;
– The structural drivers that put pressure on the mental health of Australians, allowing for a frank discussion of what is needed to prevent mental harm;
– Community attitudes about mental health, and the relationship Australians have with their own mental health and that of other people;
– And the track those results each quarter to identify patterns and changes over time
Our nationally reputable pollster, uComms conducts a statistically valid survey of 1,500+ residents across all states and territories. uComms also uses an automated Generative SMS Artificial Intelligence engine to interpret open text responses, thereby allowing a qualitative element to the research. The poll has attracted an unprecedented response rate for polls of its kind, indicating the eagerness of Australians to talk — in the right circumstances — about their actual lived experience of mental health issues.
The key findings of the first two polls are attached below:
Project Outcomes
The National Mental Health Monitor aims to act as a compass to help understand the ever-evolving landscape of mental well-being in Australia.
By better understanding the prevalence and patterns of mental health issues, and speaking publicly about these issues, we are aiming to catalyse public policy change and government action.
