Marine Rescue Shoalhaven saves lives on the water. This is our mission, 24 hours a day, every day. Members of the boating community can be confident that when they call for help, a professionally trained and equipped Marine Rescue Shoalhaven crew will be quickly under way.

Our services to the boating community include: 24/7 emergency Search and Rescue. The State’s only Log On and vessel tracking service for recreational boaters, giving them the confidence of knowing a professional rescue service is keeping watch. Around-the-clock monitoring of marine radio for distress calls from boaters in trouble along the NSW coastline. Boating safety education and advocacy, including boat and jet ski license and marine radio courses for boaters.

Our area of coverage is Gerroa in the north, Beecroft in the south and out 35 nautical miles to sea approx. 70kms. Our volunteers cover a diverse range of backgrounds and cultural backgrounds. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our unit.

Project Summary

Marine Rescue Shoalhaven has recently changed over from handheld radios to ROip (radio over internet protocol). This is being implemented across the state and our unit has just received the equipment.

Marine Rescue Shoalhaven would like to be able to purchase four pedestal microphones for our operators inside of our search and rescue facility within the Shoalhaven these microphones will be an essential investment to ensure effective communication between both our radio operators and our vessels crews but also the general boating public as we conduct our duties. Clear and reliable communication is paramount for ensuring the safety of the boating community Pedestal microphones offer distinct advantages in this context.

Our radio operators must be able to transmit critical information to vessels out on the water with precision and clarity. Whether they are issuing navigational instructions, providing weather updates, conveying important messages and or doing their general duties. This clarity is vital, especially in challenging weather conditions or situations where background noise might interfere with communication.

Project Outcomes

From a workplace health and safety (WHS) perspective, the integration of a pedestal microphone enhances operational efficiency and minimises risks related to hygiene and the transmission of illness among our radio operators. Currently, operators use headsets which present a risk of germ transmission due to frequent handling and contact with the face. By transitioning to pedestal microphones, which require minimal physical contact and are easier to clean and sanitise we can significantly reduce the risk of transmission among our operators. This proactive measure not only safeguards the health and well-being of our volunteers but also ensures uninterrupted communication during our critical emergency service duties.

We have a number of senior members at our unit who wish to feel safe and avoid colds, viruses and other airborne transmitted diseases. We do not wish to lose volunteers because of healthy workplace concerns. After surveying our volunteers it was agreed that pedestal microphones would make them feel happier and use the radio system.
