Mount Gambier’s In Home Hospice Care Inc (IHHCare) provides personalised palliative care that upholds dignity, independence, and quality of life for individuals facing life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, neurological, kidney, heart, liver, or lung diseases.
Our services are designed to combat isolation and offer comprehensive support to both patients and their caregivers, many of whom face their own health challenges. We help those in our care live as independently and comfortably as possible.
IHHCare's objectives are clear: to combat isolation through daily living support, transportation, social engagement, and companionship, reducing feelings of loneliness and enhancing mental well-being. We offer respite care, advance care planning, and grief counselling to ease the physical, emotional, and financial burdens on families and carers. Our goal is to maintain independence and dignity through practical assistance with everyday tasks, improving comfort and quality of life.
Our free community services include shopping and transport assistance, social engagement, respite care to give family carers essential breaks, advance care planning to prepare for future healthcare decisions, and grief counselling for support through loss.
Servicing South Australia’s lower southeast, IHHCare recognises the unique challenges of accessing healthcare in rural areas. We strive to bridge this gap by delivering compassionate, in-home care that eases carer ‘burnout’ and reduces hospital admissions.
With your support, we can continue to lighten the burden on patients and carers in our rural community facing life-limiting conditions. Our specially trained volunteers ensure no one faces these challenges alone, helping people to ‘live well’ through local compassionate care.
Project Summary
Mount Gambier In Home Hospice Care Inc. (IHHCare) seeks funding to implement a “Practical Skills for Caregivers” program, a free educational initiative designed to empower family caregivers in rural communities. This program will equip caregivers with essential skills and knowledge to offer effective, compassionate care for seriously ill loved ones at home.
Facilitated by a registered nurse, sessions will be delivered across Mount Gambier, Millicent, Penola, and Port MacDonnell over a 10-month period. Consisting of 8 programs in total, each program will include 3 workshops, each lasting 1.5 hours. This means that 24 workshops will be conducted in total.
The workshops will cover vital topics such as managing end-of-life symptoms, medication handling, hygiene assistance, mobility support, and self-care strategies to help prevent caregiver burnout. The 3-session structure allows caregivers to gain in-depth, practical knowledge and hands-on experience with the caregiving tasks most relevant to their daily lives.
By offering this program free of charge, IHHCare ensures caregivers in rural areas, who often face economic hardship, can access valuable support without financial strain. The program also fosters a sense of community by providing caregivers with opportunities to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive network.
This initiative fills a crucial gap in rural healthcare, offering practical training and emotional support to caregivers in underserved areas. Through this program, IHHCare aims to improve the quality of life for both caregivers and those they care for, while strengthening community resilience and cohesion in the Lower South East region.
Project Outcomes
Improved Caregiver Confidence and Competence:
Caregivers will acquire practical skills and emotional support, improving their ability to manage essential caregiving tasks such as medication administration, hygiene assistance, and mobility support. This will result in higher-quality, more compassionate care for individuals with life-limiting conditions, ultimately enhancing the care recipients' comfort and well-being.
Enhanced Well-being of Care Recipients:
By equipping caregivers with the tools and strategies they need, the program will directly improve the day-to-day experience of those they care for, ensuring increased comfort, independence, and dignity for care recipients.
Reduced Caregiver Burnout:
Workshops focused on self-care, stress management, and resilience will help caregivers build emotional strength, reducing the risk of burnout and allowing them to sustain their caregiving roles long-term, enhancing overall family well-being.
Strengthened Community Support:
The program will foster a network of well-prepared caregivers, creating a supportive, connected community. As caregiver stress is reduced and confidence grows, the community becomes more compassionate, and vulnerable individuals feel supported in their care journey.
Increased Independence for Care Recipients:
The program will enable individuals to remain in their homes longer, enhancing their quality of life and preserving their sense of place within the community, especially in rural areas where healthcare resources are limited.
Positive Impact in Rural Areas:
By addressing the unique challenges of rural communities, where access to healthcare is often restricted, the program will bridge gaps in support, improving the well-being of both caregivers and those they care for, ultimately benefiting the wider community.
