Just Peoples is a global community of people who have two things in common; a passion to eliminate global poverty, and the drive to do something about it. Some of our people have the knowledge and ideas to make a real impact on their communities, while others have access to resources.
We believe in a world without poverty. A world where communities have the power to solve their own problems, their own way.
We don’t believe that foreign intervention is the key to solving poverty. We believe that real, sustainable change comes about when people are given the resources to lift their own communities out of poverty.
We tackle global poverty by backing grassroots leaders to design and deliver locally appropriate solutions to the challenges their communities face. Just Peoples currently supports 16 local leaders from across Africa and Asia who are bringing to life a wide-range of projects based on delivering gender-based, health, education, technological, and economic outcomes for people living in poverty.
The leaders we support are effective because they have a deep understanding of the local context of poverty in peoples’ lives, and have established respected relationships in their communities. Their insight and expertise make them the best people to understand problems, and implement culturally appropriate solutions that work. So far we have supported 34 local leaders to deliver 202 grassroots projects globally, impacting the lives of over 240,000 people living in poverty.
Project Summary
Twenty-one million Bangladeshis lack access to clean drinking water. Despite the abundance of water, it is often heavily contaminated. Those who have no alternative but to drink this water regularly suffer from waterborne diseases. In the extremely remote hill tracts of Bangladesh, accessing safe drinking water poses a tremendous challenge due to the mountainous terrain. With surface water and rain being unpredictable throughout the year, Indigenous families face a daily struggle with accessing water. Many people are forced to walk for miles over several hours to collect drinking water for their families and carry it home.
Building a well in this challenging terrain is too expensive because aquifer and groundwater sources are located 250-300 meters below ground level.
Funding this project will enable a team of local Bangladeshi water technicians to address the water to drill a community water point below 250 meters underground, powering it with solar energy to create a reliable water source for the indigenous communities in the remote hill tract region of Bandarban.
Project Outcomes
A reliable solar-powered water source will ensure clean water access for more than 2,000 people, improving their health outcomes across the board.
The new local water source will save Indigenous community members hours of time out of their day which are currently spent collecting water for their families. This is time that they could be spending engaging in other livelihood activities and improving their quality of life.
There will also be safety outcomes, particularly for women and girls who bear the bulk of the water collection responsibilities. Those collecting water will no longer need to cover such unstable terrain to access clean water where they risk injuring themselves or dying due to falls. Additionally, women will not be travelling alone such far distances where they are currently vulnerable to attacks and sexual abuse with limited access to help given the isolated areas they currently walk through to access clean water.
