Field of Interest
- First Nations communities
Target Population
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Professional workforce

Woor-Dungin is an alliance of Aboriginal organisations and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals that work together for self-determination, community development, reconciliation and advocacy. Since its inception in 2015, Woor-Dungin has assisted a diverse range of Aboriginal community-led organisations from across Victoria to access the funding and pro-bono support they have required to grow from fledgling groups of committed individuals to thriving community hubs with the capacity and resources to respond to local needs. We call this vital intermediary work our “Aboriginal Partnership Program.” As a fundamental and foundational principal, we are guided by the priorities of our Aboriginal partners. In response to their appeal for our advocacy, we initiated the Criminal Records Discrimination Project in 2016 and this work gave rise to the introduction of a legislated spent convictions scheme in Victoria. It also earnt Woor-Dungin the 2018 Indigenous Philanthropy Award from Philanthropy Australia.
Our success as an organisation saw us winning the 2023 Volunteering Victoria award for Volunteering Partnerships of the Year and we were selection by the Victorian Premier to receive the Premier's Volunteering Excellence Organisation of the Year.
Project Summary
Woor-Dungin is scaling up the work of bringing philanthropy into deeper, more respectful and mutually beneficial relationships with ACCOs. We contribute to lasting systemic change by:
Empowering Community
Developing a vibrant Community of Practice. The purpose of this Community of Practice is to create a space for ACCOs to develop and share ideas with Woor-Dungin, each other and with representatives of philanthropy about achieving their individual and collective self determined goals. This may include advocacy for systemic change as determined by the ACCOs.
Decolonising Philanthropy
Providing multiple opportunities for key philanthropic partners to meet with Aboriginal community leaders from across Victoria and to see their work in action. Woor-Dungin’s On Country Visits program supports our Aboriginal partners’ preference for staying on their own land and offers philanthropists a unique opportunity to experience Aboriginal culture.
Building Relationships
Maintaining intensive and regular contact with a core group of up ten to fifteen ACCOs and key partners in the philanthropic sector through our Aboriginal Partnership Program, comprising monthly Yarning Circles, quarterly On Country visits to different regions of Victoria, capacity building workshops and an annual On Country Gathering.
Continuing to listen deeply to the needs of Aboriginal communities, enabling self-determined solutions which acknowledge the asymmetry of power and resources in the traditional philanthropic ecosystem and sharing these understandings with our partners in Philanthropy.
Project Outcomes
The strength of relationships between ACCOs and philanthropy will be key to the success of the many facets of our work. This will be measured by the experience of and attitudes toward partnership, understanding, and trust, as well as intentions and actions flowing from the relationships built.
We will also keep record of key quantitative measures, including:
- Number of grant applications completed by Aboriginal Partnership Program members before, during, and after involvement with Woor-Dungin;
- Number of successful applications;
- Amount of philanthropic funding and pro-bono support secured by Aboriginal Partnership Program members.
We will consult with ACCOs regarding how they would like to evaluate the outcomes of their involvement with us and use those metrics in our evaluation process. We will ask philanthropy for feedback on the experiences of meeting with community leaders and members on country. We will gather case studies and interviews with community members on what they have gained from their interactions with grant makers and on the “before and after” of their journey to bring about meaningful change with the support of philanthropy.
We will monitor "cultural change" within the philanthropic sector through regular focus group discussions with our philanthropic partners.
