Meerilinga is a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that promotes the rights of children. We work with children, families, early childhood professionals, planners and the community to raise that status of children in Western Australia. Meerilinga is recognised for its excellence in promoting and supporting the education, care and wellbeing of children and providing a diverse range of professional resources and support to children. Meerilinga aims to improve the quality of life for children of WA through allowing for the children to participate in their own decision making, supporting organisations that advance the development of children, advocating for the wellbeing of children and providing services for the community.
Our Mission is to be outstanding in the development and wellbeing of children and to support their families and community as a local, independent, charitable organisation.
Our Kingsley location provides a Kindy readiness program as well as a bindi Kindy where children from the community can come and build connections with one another while learning and practicing social skills. These programs help children become ready for school.
Project Summary
Rhythm and movement for self-regulation (RAMSR) is a program that targets children’s self-regulation through leveraging the known brain benefits of active music engagement and enables any adult with training to deliver these benefits to children. The RAMSR project aims to provide all children with an opportunity to improve their self-regulation skills through rhythm and movement in their typical educational, therapy, community and home settings.
The RAMSR program is 20-minute group sessions with children that practice coordinated movement rhythm and some great brain tricks. RAMSR targets and helps to improve children’s beat synchronization, aerobic exercise, coordinated movement, working memory, inhibition, shifting/flexibility, attentional regulation and embodied emotional regulation.
We would like to provide this program for our pre-Kindy children. The program will run twice a week for each term with our Pre-Kindy students and will be facilitated by two trained professionals.
Project Outcomes
'- Beat Synchronization: Children with better beat synchronisation skills will find self-regulating and learning in many areas comes more easily. Beat synchronisation helps to organize the brain.
- Aerobic exercise: increased aerobic fitness in children is linked to better self-regulation.
- Coordinated movement: Physical activities that embed coordinated movement are likely to support self-regulation through building relevant brain outcomes.
- Working memory / inhibition and shifting flexibility: Each executive function is linked with enhancing learning and wellbeing outcomes for individuals from early childhood and adulthood. Building these skills in early childhood will support a positive transition to school.
- Attentional regulation; Stronger early childhood attentional regulation is linked with a smoother transition to school and positive learning and wellbeing trajectories right into adulthood.
- Embodied emotional regulation: emotional regulation supports growth in other self-regulation areas and is important for social and emotional wellbeing and learning.
