Galiwin’ku Womens Space (GWS) was formed in 2015 by a group of dedicated Yolŋu women passionate about finding a solution to the ongoing domestic family violence being experienced within the Galiwin’ku community. GWS works with local, Territory and national service providers to support projects that seek to create a solution to domestic and family violence in Galiwin’ku.

GWS members are part of several community groups and committees that discuss community life and projects to build resilience and development for the region. These community groups seek a stronger, resilient community and agree that domestic violence has become the norm and community belief that violence against women cannot change.

Our Vision - We are committed to stopping the cycle of violence and will tirelessly pursue innovative ideas that will help build a stronger and safer community.

Our Mission - To stop the cycle of violence and create real change in our community by empowering women in the community to come together to support and encourage the healing and wellbeing of each other.

Our Values - We have three main values; Community, Organisation & Members. We exist as an organisation only because of the values we inherited from our community that respects, celebrates and communicates Yolŋu culture.

Project Summary

The Galiwin’ku Women’s Space is seeking funding to support its operations in providing vital services to women and families in Galiwin’ku and Gapuwiyak. These services are crucial in supporting survivors of domestic violence in our community, and educating and developing resources is vital in changing the narrative.

Service Delivery of the Women’s Shelter:
The domestic violence centre’s primary focus is to offer survivors a safe haven. We propose to allocate a significant portion of the funding towards maintaining the women’s shelter. This includes covering operational costs such as facility maintenance, security measures, 24/7 staffing, counselling services, case management, and access to support. By prioritising survivors’ safety, well-being, and empowerment, we can support a stronger community into the future.

Operations for a Remote Office:
To ensure efficient operation and coordination, we propose establishing a remote office equipped with the necessary infrastructure and technology. This office will serve as the central hub for administrative tasks and communication with external stakeholders. The allocated funds will cover expenses related to rent and utilities, enabling us to operate seamlessly and maintain effective communication channels with our team members and stakeholders.

Vehicle Management:
Transportation is a crucial aspect of our operations, allowing us to provide timely assistance to survivors in need. We seek funding to maintain our vehicle fleet, including fuel expenses, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Having reliable and safe transportation will facilitate outreach efforts, emergency responses and support survivors in accessing essential medical care, court hearings, and educational opportunities.

Remote Programs Delivery:
We will continue to deliver our remote programs, such as wellbeing camps and collaborations with stakeholders for education workshops. We plan to invest in technology and training to expand our remote programs. These initiatives will enable us to connect with women and families in Galiwin’ku, Gapuwiyak and any visiting women.

Laundry Centre:
The on-site laundry centre will continue to support families of Galiwin’ku. Funding will be allocated for purchasing laundry equipment, maintenance, supplies, and staffing. This will ensure survivors have access to clean clothing and bedding, promoting their physical and emotional recovery.

Project Outcomes

Support will allow us to continue to operate a 24/7 holistic service that supports women and children. For this service to continue to operate fully we require 24/7 staff for day time and night to provide counselling and well-being services as well as cleaners and laundry attendants.
