The Renters is a satirical impact documentary bringing debate and possibilities for change in the housing sector to screens across the country in late 2024. Hosted by Mark Humphries and executive produced by Craig Reucassel, it is produced by Wedge-Tail Pictures and supported by Documentary Australia Foundation. Wedge-Tail Pictures has a history of making impact documentaries, and this one is no different - we're using gallows humour and satire to tell the story of renting in Australia, from the cities to the suburbs and the bush. How did Australia get into a position where a third of the population - and rising - denied a chance at forming communities, locked out of acting on climate change, with essential workers unable to live near their jobs and young families unable to live in the one place without ripping kids from school. With our partnership with a major streaming platform, 'The Renters' will present solutions and call for action ahead of the 2025 election, in a way never quite seen before.

Project Summary

The Renters is an upcoming satirical impact documentary on the housing crisis, told through the eyes of the third of Australians who rent. With support from Create NSW and The City of Sydney, we are heading for a major streaming platform to reach corners of Australia the news media does not, where we will bring the laughs, the solutions, and the calls to action on this mess.

It is hosted and co-written by former ABC 730 satirist Mark Humphries (also a renter), directed by former journalist Bill Code (Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The Lake of Scars) and executive produced by Craig Reucassel (Chaser, War on Waste). We have game-leading impact consultant Leeanne Torpey on board (War on Waste, Big Deal, Ithaka et al)

We are convinced our funny but factual exploration of the lives of key workers, families, community and climate is a way to help shift the dial ahead of the next election.

Project Outcomes

We are looking to have impact and raise awareness in a way not done before. By exploring this issue with gallows humour, The Renters is a documentary unlike any other. This is not preaching to the converted, this is an impact doco on a mainstream platform with a major impact campaign behind it. We will give space to call for solutions to the rental crisis, as well as highlighting the issue. After and during production, we are developing a major impact campaign to create tools for change which our many partners can use.
