The dedicated Intensive Care team at Box Hill Hospital provides comprehensive and compassionate care for critically ill patients who require constant monitoring and advanced medical interventions.
These patients often face complex health challenges, including respiratory failure, severe infections and multi-organ dysfunction.

Our multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, allied health and support staff work tirelessly to provide life-saving treatments and support.

In addition to medical care we understand the importance of addressing the emotional and psychological needs of our patients. Prolonged ICU stays can be stressful and disorientating and we strive to create a healing environment that supports both physical and emotional recovery.

Studies have shown that exposure to natural light and outdoor environments can significantly improve patients' sleep-wake cycles, mood and overall wellbeing. An ideal outdoor space for our patients would be a serene and inviting environment designed to promote healing and relaxation.

Project Summary

Our ICU cares for some of the most vulnerable, critically unwell patients, many of whom spend extended periods of time within our unit. We have observed that exposure to natural light and even brief periods spent outdoors markedly improves the sleep-wake cycle, mood and overall wellbeing of patients admitted to the intensive care unit.

The current balcony area available to our ICU patients appears very stark, grey and exposed. This environment is far from ideal for promoting the healing and emotional wellbeing of our patients. To address this, we plan to transform this space into a more functional and inviting environment that encourages use by patients, their families and our dedicated staff.

Our project includes the installation of a shade structure, additional seating and the introduction of plants and foliage. We are confident that these improvements will create an environment that supports both physical and emotional recovery.

We are seeking funding assistance to cover the costs associated with purchasing and installing the necessary shade structures, seating and greenery.

Project Outcomes

The expected outcomes of this project are multifaceted and will benefit patients, their families and staff:

- Improved patient well-being and enhanced recovery- the outdoor space will provide a peaceful and restorative environment, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression among patients. Access to natural light and fresh air will contribute to better sleep patterns and overall improvements in patients' mood. The therapeutic benefits of nature have been well documented and we expect to see positive impacts on physical health and recovery times.

- Increased family engagement- a welcoming and comfortable outdoor space will encourage families to spend more time with their loved ones, providing crucial emotional support during recovery. This can also improve the overall patient experience and satisfaction.

- Staff well-being- the improved outdoor area will also serve as a respite for our dedicated staff, offering them a place to relax and recharge. This can help reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction, ultimately leading to better patient care.

- Community Connection- the project demonstrates a commitment to holistic patient care and fosters a sense of community within the hospital. It may serve as a model for other healthcare facilities seeking to improve patient environments.
