Classroom of Hope Classroom of Hope

Classroom of Hope builds schools using recycled materials in developing nations, because everyone deserves access to quality education and a cleaner planet. We envision a clean world where every child thrives in safe, uplifting schools. In our 11-year history, Classroom of Hope has been dedicated to providing quality education to children across South East Asia, having developed 109 schools and over 300 classrooms, benefiting nearly 30,000 children. Recognising the pressing need to address climate and plastic waste challenges, we initiated a mission to explore innovative solutions for more sustainable building practices.

Our Block Schools program officially commenced in June 2021, marking a significant milestone with the construction of the world's first Block School using Block Solutions Finnish technology and recycled plastic. Since then, we have continued to advance this pioneering approach, completing 21 block schools (64 classrooms) and 4 block homes, along with 26 toilets. Additionally, we have established plans to build 117 block schools in Lombok, Indonesia, all constructed from recycled plastic waste. Our efforts to date have resulted in the removal of over 90 tons of plastic waste from the environment, with a projected total of 540 tons removed upon completion, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

We are currently expanding our Block Schools program with the introduction of Community Enrichment education programs in collaboration with local NGO Good Neighbours Indonesia. This initiative targets vital areas such as waste management, child rights literacy, early marriage prevention, and English teacher training. Our aim is to enhance teacher capabilities, boost English proficiency, create job opportunities, encourage recycling, advocate for child rights, and combat school dropouts due to early marriage.

By implementing these programs, we're not only responding to the aftermath of a natural disaster but also revolutionising education in North Lombok, offering children hope and empowerment

Project Summary

SDN 1 Salut was established in 1980 by the government to provide primary education for children in Salut Village, Kayangan District, North Lombok. The school had six classrooms for six study groups and a staff room. Unfortunately, the school building was affected by the Lombok earthquake in 2018. The earthquake destroyed all the classrooms and the staff room. Then, in 2019, the school received five permanent classrooms from the government. Five study groups use these classrooms. Meanwhile, one study group is still learning in the emergency classroom built after the earthquake.

The emergency classroom was constructed of plywood walls, zinc roofs, and cemented floors. This classroom is in poor condition; the walls are no longer intact, and the class has no furniture. The students are studying on the carpet. The school desperately needs an additional classroom for its students to safely and comfortably conduct practical learning activities. Classroom of Hope and our local partner plan to improve the learning conditions for teachers and students at SDN 1 Salut by providing a new classroom which will feature an open terrace area along the front. It will be built using recycled plastic blocks, which are earthquake-resistant and certified to last up to 100 years. The classroom will feature aluminium doors and window frames, galvanised metal roofing, and floors finished in white ceramic tiles. They will be fully furnished with desks, chairs, fans and whiteboards. Our local implementing partner will engage a trusted local building contractor to coordinate the construction, purchase local materials, and reuse or recycle materials wherever possible.

As this is a public school, the government manages the teachers’ training and salaries. The school staff and community will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the new school building. These new, fully equipped, and environmentally sustainable classroom will allow the students at SDN 1 Salut to learn in safe and comfortable surroundings, well protected from the elements.

Project Outcomes

The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are students, teachers, and parents in earthquake-affected Lombok communities. They will gain access to a safe and classroom, specifically, 141 students and 9 teachers will directly benefit from this project. By using the Block Solutions block product, the classroom will remove 1.8 tons of plastic waste from the environment.
