The Parndana Show Society is a small community group that organises and runs a small agricultural show for our region each year. Located in the centre of Kangaroo Island South Australia, we help members of all farming and non-farm backgrounds engage with each other with common interests.
Each year we try to come up with new and innovative ways to allow members of our community to interact, from the grower to the wholesalers and from wholesalers to the consumers. Often we do this by creating a theme for the event each year that coincides with current social or economical issues.
We engage with all members of the community from the very young and children through the local area school, through to the senior members. We try to make everything we do inclusive for all.
Project Summary
While our event is currently small, we see ourselves growing to be the biggest agricultural event for our region. To achieve this goal we require funding for new marquees coverage to protect people from the elements. In 2024 we hope to grow our capacity to hold 60 trade-spaces mixed of open and covered, with the option to grow in the future.
This will equate to 960 square meters of space dedicated to commercial, informational, and community-sharing space, an increase of 270 meters. As we grow, we also require more tables for competition space and also chairs for people to have somewhere to sit.
We have a small committee of volunteers, and with some members being senior, setting up and packing down can be difficulted. To ease this for our volunteers, we looking to purchase cartage trollies to move items around with ease. This will reduce the risk of injury from heavy lifting.
We would like to reduce waste going to landfill by purchasing new green organic waste bins. In the future, we want our event to be environmentally friendly with little to no waste in landfill. Currently, most waste from our event is from food and packaging. If we can separate this and send it to compost it will benefit the community with less waste and be reused for garden spaces.
Lastly, we need upgrades to our building lighting and electrical work, to ensure the use of the building into the future, while also reducing our electricity usage with greener lighting.
Project Outcomes
Small community events like ours help support community involvement and interactions. Without them, people lose interest and often move away to the city.
We encourage people to get involved with our event, either by volunteering, entering competitions, or just coming along for the atmosphere. When more people and their families can get involved within their community, this helps the community to grow.
Strong communities help to support growth in the local economy. Many small business ventures have started at our event and have grown into thriving enterprises. We hope to see our event grow each year, helping to grow our community and helping the next person start and grow their future business.
With the help of this funding, we will be able to grow our capacity to host more people and businesses at our event. Allowing more people and more businesses to engage with each other on a social and professional level. This will benefit both parties and support the economy locally and also afar as often farm supply companies operate from mainland Australia and local farmers normally need to travel frequently to seek out supplies and machinery. Cutting down travel times to seek out these needed resources will also boost productivity.
Other outcomes we expect from this funding is to ease our strain on volunteers when setting up. We also seek to reduce waste going to landfill with new green organic bins and upgrade to power and lighting to extend the use of our facility into the future.
