Project Summary

True To You Ltd envisions the elimination of violence against women within Logan City and with the aspiration to become change agents and induce change across Australia.

True To You believes in a free and humanist society in which the most critical stakeholders—women—are acknowledged, respected, and protected from all forms of discrimination. Women are also free to fully exercise their bodily autonomy, agency, and fundamental rights to live a life of dignity and self-fulfilment.

The program’s evidence-based methodology and design take inspiration from feminist and human rights principles and are grounded in understanding the history, pathology, psychology, patterns, and underlying causes of violence. The program will be tailored for the women of Logan City with migrant and refugee status, and True To You will provide training and be a part of the global movement mainstreaming violence prevention skills to advance awareness around gender-based violence in the participant’s community.

The participants will be a part of extensive and immersive training and capacity-building sessions in recognising threatening and abusive behaviours and building awareness and confidence of personal strengths and intelligence to interrupt violence before escalating in real-time using psychological, emotional, verbal, and physical techniques.

True To You aspires to localise the ESD methodology to meet the local cultural ethos and sensitivities of respective cultures by combining learning with applied practice and building participants’ capacities through a face-to-face training trainer program.

It is pertinent to mention that the ESD methodology includes a holistic training program, which (proven after thorough post-program evaluation) effectively increases self-confidence to assert rights, needs, and boundaries and take control of one’s mind and body.

True To You would be instrumental in building feminist spaces for action in the respective communities. It would also equip women with the knowledge and skills to advance the regional feminist agenda of leaving no one behind and addressing all forms of violence against girls and women. It is pertinent to mention that the instructor for True To You has trained participants in over 41 countries to date.

A trained facilitator would lead the project and will be extremely instrumental in building knowledge and gathering evidence-based data that could potentially improve the community’s safety. The project will respond to local realities and approach future responses and interventions accordingly.

Project Outcomes

The project will help forge sustainable opportunities to continue amplifying feminist action beyond the project’s life. Moreover, it will raise awareness and strengthen the capacities of local organisations to advance women’s rights and gender equality.

The project will also create spaces to discuss, debate, and demand positions on women’s voice, agency, leadership, and representative participation in decision-making processes in public, private, and civic spheres.

The conversations held will be instrumental in agenda setting and movement with relevant stakeholders roundtables. Women can learn that they have a right to be heard, followed by actionable steps that require an outcome.

The program will be instrumental in creating a pool of active change agents who are able to identify concrete research-based problems that hinder the expansion of feminist action in their respective cultures and gain knowledge, tools and skills to advocate for more excellent protection of women’s rights and creation of safe spaces, nurture synergies, protect their feminine right to safety and finally, design/develop projects for collaborative community-based action to eliminate barriers to feminine action.

With sexual assault and violence against women increasing, True To You seeks to train community leaders in the ESD evidence-based methodology. Talking points around assault and violence are taboo in many cultures. They are not spoken about freely, yet speaking up and calling out abusive behaviours is the very thing that can set women free.

ESD is a process of healing and self-empowerment, giving the woman the power to rewrite her story. She is taught not to be passive in her life, and to learn ESD also means passing on these skills to her daughter and sons so they do not become victims of abuse. Everyone gets tools that give them the power to create change in their household and community. When we have reached several epic proportions, generational change can be initiated. It is like the analogy of a drop in the ocean.

By partnering with grassroots networks, we can increase awareness and communication around a particular issue. Together, we can optimise our networks to promote awareness around violence prevention education. Through capacity building and local initiatives, each country will take a vital role in delivering culture-specific practices of ESD.
