Cerebral Palsy Alliance Cerebral Palsy Alliance

Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) is a ground-breaking, global centre of expertise for cerebral palsy research, advocacy, intervention, and assistive technology innovation. For over 75 years, we have been driven by our founders’ vision of a future where nothing is impossible for people with cerebral palsy (CP) and similar conditions. Today, our 2500+ employees and 150,000+ donors, fundraisers, and entrepreneurs, are contributing to solving the next set of impossibilities.

CPA supports around 6,500 babies, children, and adults with disability from 138 locations across NSW and ACT with early childhood intervention, therapy, health and wellbeing, sports, assistive technology, independence skill building, accommodation, and supported employment services. Our Research Foundation was established in 2005 to support and fund the prevention, treatment, and cure for CP, which affects 17 million+ people worldwide. We are the world’s largest private funder of CP research.

Our goals are to provide services and strategies for every stage of life; find ways to prevent, treat and cure CP and develop technologies to improve life and advocate for change that matters

Project Summary

CPActive Young Changemakers is a 12-week program, open to all people aged 18-30 with CP and similar disabilities. With the support of CPA’s award winning Training Alliance, this program has been designed by and for young people with CP. The program is designed to develop skills, confidence and provide equitable and adequate support for pathways after school.

The three key focus areas are:

– Skills development using specifically designed learning material to teach practical skills in public speaking, storytelling and advocacy;

– Building confidence and skills for greater community connection, making new friends, expanding networks and finding meaningful work;

– Building leadership skills and strategies for navigating life challenges and independent living.

The program covers 5 advocacy and leadership topics across 3 months; easily accessible learning and development content, fortnightly activities that engage, develop and connect and ultimately results in paid work for CP champions as they share their experience and skills with future participants of the program.

Project Outcomes

This program aims to amplify awareness and advocate for change for people with disability aged 18-30 years old. 50 young people each year with CP or similar disabilities will be empowered to become change leaders in their communities.

Measurements of success will be evaluated via pre and post program surveys and self-assessments across key criteria including community engagement; advocacy initiatives; employment opportunities; and leadership pathways occurring post program. 190 young people over 3 years will be invited to participate via a nationwide marketing and recruitment program with no less than 150 completing the program in the next 3 years.

A pilot program was completed in December 2023 where we learned young people with disabilities want to connect with others just like them; they want to participate in normalised activities that focus on their strengths; they want to reclaim their identity and fight for their rights; they want to increase opportunities for leadership and advocacy roles. These important learnings will underpin our direction and desired outcomes for all participations in the program.
