PROJECT SUMMARY

Here at the The Suburban Review, we are strengthening our regional focus in 2024/25, launching the dedicated publishing avenue The Regional Review to amplify stories of life outside metropolitan centres. We’re also continuing to nurture emerging talents through workshops and mentorship, providing supported pathways into publishing.

A foundation grant will directly support the creation and distribution of new work, help maintain fair rates of pay for contributors, and ensure the continuation of our visionary ‘Jumpstart a Journal’ workshops and digital archiving projects.

We’re calling on Australia’s arts philanthropists to support the production of our next four issues and our 2025 workshop program. As we see Government funding drifting farther away, this kind of support is a lifeline that enables us to continue our mission of bringing strange and surprising stories to the forefront. You will make possible the creation, editing, and publication of works from new and underrepresented voices, fostering a more equitable literary landscape, and ensure that the rich tapestry of narratives across the country—especially from less-heard regional areas—continues to thrive.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

Our 2024/25 program is poised to enrich the Australian literary landscape through its dual focus on amplifying regional narratives and nurturing emerging editorial talent. We anticipate publishing a diverse array of works from at least 40 regional writers and artists, each chosen for their unique perspectives and artistic merit. This endeavour will increase the visibility of underrepresented voices and enhance cultural dialogue across Australia, fostering greater appreciation for the richness of regional creativity.

Simultaneously, our Jumpstart a Journal workshop is expected to equip at least 16 emerging editors with the skills and confidence necessary to make impactful contributions to the publishing industry, with 10 fully funded places for First Nations and/or remote applicants. Participants will leave the program with hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and expanded networks, significantly boosting their career prospects. The combination of these focused initiatives will foster a more vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic literary community, setting a new benchmark for excellence and diversity in Australian arts and culture.

Profile of The Suburban Review Incorporated

The Suburban Review Incorporated

The Suburban Review has supported emerging and mid-career writers, artists, and editors since it was founded in 2013, through a publishing practice and a range of creative and professional development programs.

Neither the ‘Melbourne’ nor the ‘Sydney’ Review, we celebrate work which might otherwise fall through the cracks of mainstream publishing: the weird, the experimental, the marginal, slantwise, and always-in-progress. We’ve also worked to build a platform and a home for under-represented and structurally excluded voices.

Working mainly with our peers across Australia—though with increasingly international scope—we’ve built our organisation around principles of ethical publishing.
To us, this means aiming for:
- Sustainability
- Inclusion
- Fair remuneration for creative and administrative work
- Accessibility, and
- Diversity
