PROJECT SUMMARY

WWILD provides specialised counselling and case management to young people and adults who have an intellectual disability and have been victims of sexual violence or other crime, or who are at significant risk of sexual violence.

We currently offer trauma counselling in four locations across Greater Brisbane.

We also offer case management support for victims of crime, going out to meet people in their home or community, ensuring they know their rights and options as a victim of crime, and providing practical support to enact their choices, to improve their safety, uphold their rights and recover from crime.

We also provide group support, running a Women’s Group and a Rainbow Group, which help reduce social isolation, improve life and relationship skills, build self-esteem, and build knowledge about rights and living healthy, safe lives.
We also offer targeted psychoeducation and therapeutic groups on healthy relationships, sex and sexuality, domestic and family violence, and online safety.

WWILD also believes strongly in prevention and improving wider knowledge and responses in supporting people with intellectual disability who have experienced violence. We deliver training, create resources, support research, engage in high level systemic advocacy, and support people with lived experience in Peer Work and systemic advocacy work. We are currently working on developing a book of counselling strategies that are effective with our client group, and on a violence prevention project supporting women and non-binary people with lived experience to engage in violence prevention work.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

WWILD's vision is for a society that values people with disabilities and acknowledges their abilities, and upholds their rights to live free from violence.

To do this we work to ensure people are supported when they experience violence so they can recover, and not experience more violence. We also support people with intellectual disbailities to use their own voices to create community change, and share our knowledge and experience to creater broad change through training and resource development.

Funding provided to WWILD would support us to continue and expand our work in building a society where all people are valued, treated with respect, and provided with the supports and reasonable accommodations they need to live good, safe lives.

Profile of WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention Association Inc.

WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention Association Inc.

WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention Association is a Brisbane-based non-profit organisation that works to achieve social justice and systemic change that upholds the rights of people with intellectual and learning disabilities to live free from violence.

WWILD was formed in 1998 due to the high rates of sexual violence being experienced by young women with intellectual disability in the community. Today WWILD supports people with intellectual and learning disabilties or all genders across Greater Brisbane, and provides state-wide phone support and referral. Through our two main programs we provide victims of crime recovery support to victims of violent crime, primarliy sexual violence and domestic violence.

As the only service of our kind in Australia we have a strong focus on capacity building, providing training across the community sector and government bodies, and working alongside people with lived experience of disbaility and violence to develop accessible resources to improve information and service provision.

WWILD - Sexual Violence Prevention Association Inc. is an organization underpinned by feminist and community development frameworks which:

- Recognises the gendered nature of violence.
- Believes in working alongside people with intellectual and learning disabilities to enhance their power and choices in a safe environment.
- Believes in their worth and capacity by actively encouraging their participation in personal and political change.
- Believes in supporting them to achieve self determination.
