CERA is an independent Medical Research Institute working towards prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. We work in a range of partnerships and collaborations focussing on conditions such as inherited retinal diseases, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration as well as innovative technical advances to understand the working of the eye and its ability to signal other conditions such as Diabetes and Alzheimers.

Many of our researchers are also practicing clinicians and surgeons, bringing a deep, real-world understanding of how eye disease affects quality of life. Our Consumer Advisory Group plays a vital role by sharing lived experiences of eye conditions and they participate in research and clinical trials. Their insights help us continually refine our approach, ensuring that trials and studies are conducted in a way that is both high-quality and positive for participants.

Our aim is to take new technologies and methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment into real- life clinical trials faster so that more people can benefit from these advances earlier.

Your donation will help support a wide-range of eye-research, which includes cell reprogramming to regenerate lost light sensitive cells in the eye and restore vision; first in Australia surgeries to deliver gene therapy to make up for the lost function caused by genetic mistakes in a patient’s own cells, discovery of new treatments for dry age-related macular degeneration and using gene therapy to regenerate damaged optic nerve fibres, in a discovery that could help treat glaucoma.
