Welcome back to Impact Fund Notes, our monthly reflection on best-practice giving and the ACF Impact Fund – our flagship collective giving initiative.
Philanthropy often asks, “What should we fund?” Just as important is another question: “When will funding make the greatest difference?”
The answer is not always at the start of a neat annual cycle. Opportunities to create meaningful change can emerge unexpectedly, whether through an urgent legal challenge, a brief window created by a policy shift, or a growing movement that needs support to build on its momentum. In these moments, timely funding can make an important difference, giving organisations the resources and flexibility to respond when opportunities arise.
That is the role of agile granting: not rushed giving, but intentional and responsive giving. It combines clear purpose, trusted relationships and informed judgement so funding can move when communities say the moment matters.
Making space for responsive giving
The strongest responsive funding is neither ad hoc nor detached from long-term strategy. It is a deliberate capability: holding some resources in reserve, staying close to community and sector leaders, using proportionate due diligence, and being ready to decide quickly.
International practice increasingly points in the same direction. Trust-based philanthropy emphasises multi-year, unrestricted support, streamlined processes, transparent communication and responsiveness to what organisations need in real time. Recent work on flexible grantmaking also highlights the value of formal responsive funding pathways, strong relationships and continuous learning.
The people closest to an issue often understand the opportunity and levers for change. Agile grantmaking respects that expertise, placing trust and shared decision-making at the centre of the funding process.
Long-term support provides stability, capacity and room to plan, while agile support provides the ability to protect progress, test an emerging idea or act on an opening that may not remain open for long. Effective philanthropy needs both runway and readiness.
What timely funding makes possible
The Impact Fund’s support for the Human Rights Law Centre shows what readiness can mean when rights are under immediate threat. In 2025, ACF committed $10,000 to HRLC’s response to new deportation laws and helped mobilise $37,500 from the ACF giving community.
In a recent conversation with ACF, Sanmati Verma, Legal Director of HRLC’s Migration Justice team, shared how with flexible funding available, the team was able to redirect its attention, locate three people who had been taken into detention, secure legal representation, and take urgent action to prevent their removal.
As Sanmati explains, this type of funding gives organisations the flexibility to respond to developments as they unfold, rather than being constrained by project budgets developed months or years earlier.
The value of that grant cannot be understood by amount alone. Its value was also temporal: skilled people could turn their attention to the case while action was still possible.
The story of Common Threads reveals another dimension of agile granting: how timely support can help build the foundations for longer-term change. Over the past few years, two Impact Fund Agile Grants, alongside support from the ACF giving community, have helped Common Threads grow from an emerging First Nations initiative into a national movement for justice and self-determination. Its evolution shows how funding at pivotal moments can help organisations build the relationships, capacity, and momentum needed to sustain their work over time.
Today, Common Threads continues to build on this foundation through its Together for Treaty campaign. Amid intensifying political debate and uncertainty surrounding how Victoria’s historic Treaty will be honoured and upheld, the campaign is mobilising supporters, fostering public understanding, and ensuring First Nations voices remain central to conversations about Treaty and self-determination. With the state’s November election approaching, funders have a timely opportunity to support this work, helping strengthen community organising and advocacy at a critical moment.
Together, these examples challenge a common assumption: that small grants produce small change. When a grant removes a time-sensitive constraint, protects people, strengthens a coalition or helps a community shape a public decision, its influence can travel far beyond its size.
Giving together creates readiness
ACF’s vision is a thriving and inclusive Australia, and its purpose is to empower a vibrant community of philanthropists with effective giving solutions. The Impact Fund brings that purpose to life by connecting individual generosity with community insight, shared learning and coordinated action.
Collective giving is especially powerful when timing matters. A single donor may not have the relationships, context or confidence to assess an emerging opportunity quickly. Together, Fundholders can draw on ACF’s sector knowledge, combine resources and act with greater confidence, without asking community organisations to carry the full burden of educating each funder from the beginning.
This is what wise backing can look like: patient enough to support long journeys, curious enough to keep learning, and ready enough to move when a window for change appears.
A practical test for timely giving
Before making an agile grant, funders can ask:
- Is the moment consequential? What becomes possible now and what may be lost through delay?
- Is the opportunity community-led? Are people closest to the issue shaping the response and defining the impact outcomes?
- Is our process fit for purpose? Are we asking only for the information we need, without placing unnecessary demands on the organisation’s time and resources?
- Is the funding genuinely flexible? Can the organisation adapt as circumstances change?
- Will we learn as well as act? How will insight from this grant strengthen future decisions and relationships?
Ready when it matters
The best giving does more than choose worthy work. It creates the conditions for communities to lead, adapt and act at the moments when action counts most.
Through its Catalyst and Agile Grants, the Impact Fund pairs long-term commitment with timely support. That combination reflects a simple truth: lasting change takes time, but progress often depends on what we do next.
