The Centre for Public Integrity: Restoring integrity to Australia’s democracy

Nationwide

The Centre for Public Integrity (the Centre) is an independent think tank dedicated to restoring integrity to Australia’s democracy. Led by some of Australia’s pre-eminent jurists and legal academics, the Centre has four research pillars: Money in Politics – Eliminating the undue influence of money in politics; Executive Power – Ensuring the elected executive plays by the rules of Australia’s democratic system; Accountability Institutions – Protecting independence and funding of Australia’s accountability institutions; and Transparency – Ensuring transparency in the exercise of public power.

Why we recommend this initiative: The Centre is Australia’s only independent, expert-led democracy research institute.  With the recent election of a majority government, the country faces a crucial opportunity to strengthen and future-proof our democracy – strong majorities can enable bold reform, but they also risk sidelining scrutiny. That’s why the Centre is focused on Australia’s four most pressing integrity challenges, ensuring this Parliament seizes the moment and drives forward reform for greater accountability, transparency and integrity in politics.

Arid Lands Environment Centre: Defending Australia’s iconic desert country

Northern Territory

The Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) is Central Australia’s leading independent environmental organisation, with 45 years of experience advocating for the protection of Australia’s arid regions. Based in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, ALEC works across landscapes of significant ecological and cultural value, including Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kati-Thanda (Lake Eyre), and the Channel Country. These regions make up approximately 70per cent of the Territory’s landmass, containing some of the world’s most intact desert ecosystems, and are home to First Nations communities who continue to hold deep connections to Country.

Why we recommend this initiative: The Northern Territory’s desert country for thousands of years. Today, it is under increasing threat from climate change, mining, harmful development and introduced species. ALEC’s approach is grounded in scientific research, knowledge-sharing, and community engagement. The organisation collaborates with Traditional Owners, recognising their leadership and expertise in land management and environmental stewardship.
