The Eastern Star Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s grant round will have a total funding pool of $230,000 with a focus on supporting older members of Queensland’s communities. Grant applications can be up to the value of $50,000 for one year (once-off grant).

Before you apply, read the guidelines below or download here.

ABOUT THE EASTERN STAR FOUNDATION

The Eastern Star Foundation’s history of caring for older members of Queensland’s communities dates back to 1954, when a group of Order of the Eastern Star members established the organisation with a mission to provide a home for their older members – which later became an aged and community care provider known as Star Aged Living based in Beaudesert in Queensland and sold in 2018. The Foundation was established in 2019, whereby the organisation’s activities are underpinned by its values of dignity, independence and hope.

Vision
The vision of Eastern Star Foundation is to empower those who enhance the quality of life for older members of Queensland’s communities.

Mission
The Eastern Star Foundation is committed to providing financial assistance to help initiatives become a reality for charities who care for older members of Queensland’s communities, support their independence, and who are committed to helping them live well.

Guidelines

Funding considerations

The Eastern Star Foundation aims to support programs and initiatives that support older members of Queensland’s communities.

 The program/initiative must help older people to:

  • remain independent;
  • practice choice;
  • participate in their community;
  • have a support network;
  • experience healthy ageing.

The Foundation prioritises programs or initiatives that:

  • have limited access to other funding; or
  • have a funding gap that needs to be filled for the program/initiative to proceed; and
  • embed sustainability as a strategic priority and can demonstrate implementation of their sustainability plan over time.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply, your organisation must be:

  • operating in Queensland for the benefit of Queenslanders;
  • a registered charity with the ACNC; and
  • be a Deductible Gift Recipient – Item 1 (DGR 1) or have a partnership in place with an auspice organisation with DGR 1 status.

Additionally, organisations who have received a previous grant are eligible to re-apply for an extension for an existing project or a new project, but you will be required to provide a progress update for the previously funded project.

If this is applicable, there will be an opportunity in the grant application to upload a copy of the progress update as we understand that the project / program might not be in the position to supply a full grant acquittal at the time of application submission.

Funding exclusions and limitations

All projects must:

  • operate in Queensland for the benefit of Queenslanders. There may also be a broader benefit to Australians arising from the program or initiative.
  • be an evidence-based program / initiative that helps older people to remain independent, practice choice, participate in their community, have a support network and experience healthy ageing.
  • if applying for support of a research project: must be at applied research stage (i.e. the research phase where scientific knowledge is designed and translated to solve practical, real-world problems and develop actionable solutions for immediate use for the benefit of the older population).

The Foundation will not fund:

  • projects outside of Queensland
  • retrospective or deficit funding
  • general fundraising appeals
  • promotion of religion
  • political organisations
  • direct grants to individuals, including travel expenses, personal study or attendance at conferences
  • charities who directly support animals unless the animals provide assistance for older people (e.g. registered assistance dogs).
