Organisation Summary

The Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation (ASRAC) is an independent not-for-profit Aboriginal organisation based at Ramingining in north-east Arnhem Land, 580 kilometres east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Our Vision:

“Healthy country, healthy tucker, healthy families, living on our homelands.
The right people are speaking for country, passing knowledge from the old to the young.
We have strong ceremony, family, and language for country.”

ASRAC was established in 2013 to support and administer a catchment-based network of ranger groups including the Gurruwiling, Wanga Djakamirr and South-East Arafura Catchment rangers, and five satellite groups. These eight ranger groups are responsible for looking after 14,000 square kilometres of country for Yolŋu people from 46 clans.

The Arafura Swamp Rangers address significant environmental and cultural challenges across the Arafura Swamp in north-east Arnhem Land, including unmanaged wildfire, invasive species, feral animals and loss of cultural knowledge. These threats impact biodiversity, sacred sites and community wellbeing. As Traditional Owners working on our own Country, we are uniquely placed to deliver culturally informed, place-based land and water management that combines intergenerational knowledge with contemporary science.

Our current priorities include early dry-season fire management, weed and feral animal control, biodiversity monitoring, protection of cultural sites, and training and employment pathways for local Aboriginal rangers.

Funding will support ranger wages, equipment, training, and on-ground operations, ensuring consistent year-round management. Our impact includes reduced late-season wildfires, improved habitat condition, and strengthened cultural knowledge transfer through on-Country work.
