For 30 years, the Asylum Seekers Centre in Sydney’s West has been a place of welcome, providing practical, tangible support and advocacy for people seeking asylum.
Our staff help people treat complex health challenges, find a job, enrol in school, put food on the table, and navigate a new country and culture.
We offer an in-house medical clinic, social workers, Employment service, English and music classes, daily food service, Mums and Bubs and LGBTQIA+ groups, sports and arts activities, access to education and training, digital connectivity and administrative support.
We personally advocate for our clients and connect them to relevant services and departments.
We empower the people we support to tell their stories, and amplify their voices.
Our beneficiaries come from more than 90 countries, forced to flee torture, armed conflicts, crises or violence, persecution for their ethnicity, religion, sexuality or political opinion. Many have experienced trauma en-route, in camps, and in Australian detention. In FY23 we supported just under 4000 people, 25% under 18.
While people wait for the Government to consider their protection applications, they have no safety net, and very limited assistance. Many are separated from the family and community most of us depend on in our everyday lives.
Our vision is an Australia that opens its heart to people seeking asylum, affirming their basic human right to freedom from persecution, violence and fear. Recognising our shared humanity, we extend our welcome, respect and support. We become a stronger, more vibrant country as a result.
