The Australian Overseas Foundation (AOF) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1956 that provides international scholarship opportunities for Australian apprentices and tradespeople. Its purpose is to support vocationally trained Australians to gain global industry experience and bring advanced skills and knowledge back into Australian workplaces.
Each year, AOF supports a small number of high-potential apprentices and early-career tradespeople to undertake structured international placements. These experiences enable participants to develop technical capability, broaden their understanding of industry practices, and build leadership skills.
Over its history, AOF has supported more than 350 Australians across a wide range of trades, including electrical, automotive, engineering, construction and advanced manufacturing. AOF works in partnership with industry, employers and training organisations to identify candidates and facilitate meaningful international learning opportunities.
AOF’s programs are focused on knowledge transfer, with participants expected to share their learning on return to contribute to industry development in Australia. Through this model, AOF aims to strengthen workforce capability, support innovation, and ensure Australian tradespeople are equipped to engage with emerging technologies and global industry trends.
