The Australian Pet Welfare Foundation (APWF) works to create a better future for pets, people, and wildlife by using evidence-based solutions to reduce shelter euthanasia, support pet ownership, and promote coexistence with urban animals. Our mission is to improve the health and welfare of people and animals through research, education, and compassionate, practical programs.

We are best known for our innovative Community Cat Program, which provides free desexing and vet care for unowned and semi-owned cats in areas with high shelter intake. Our research shows this model reduces euthanasia and complaints, supports vulnerable people to care for animals, and allows native wildlife to recover as cat populations decline over time. Our focus on community support rather than punitive measures enables long-term, positive change.

Our priorities include expanding desexing programs in low-income communities, delivering humane cat management, and continuing peer-reviewed research that informs national policy. APWF is led by veterinarians and researchers with a strong academic track record and deep community ties.
