Australian Working Dog Rescue Int (AWDRI) is a nationwide, volunteer-driven organisation and registered charity, dedicated to saving the lives of Australian working breed dogs—those intelligent, loyal companions like kelpies, border collies, cattle dogs, and other hardworking breeds who often find themselves overlooked in shelters and council pounds.
Our mission is simple: No working dog left behind.
Every year, countless working breed dogs end up in pounds across the country, facing uncertain futures. These dogs are often misunderstood—active, driven, and born with a natural instinct to work and serve. Unfortunately, this same brilliance can lead them to be passed over for adoption and at risk of being euthanased.
AWDRI steps in at the critical moment. We respond to urgent calls from pounds and shelters, rescuing dogs before their time runs out. Once safe, they’re transported to loving foster homes where they begin their journey of healing. During this time, every dog receives complete vet care—vaccinations, desexing, dental work, and any additional treatment needed to restore their health and confidence.
We don’t just rescue—we match. Our foster carers get to know each dog’s personality, quirks, and needs, helping us pair them with forever families who appreciate the energy, intelligence, and devotion these breeds have to offer. Whether it’s a family on a farm, an experienced handler, or someone looking for a true companion, we make sure every adoption is a perfect fit.
Behind every saved dog is a story of compassion, collaboration, and commitment. From transport volunteers to foster carers, vet clinics, and adopters, the AWDRI community works tirelessly to turn hope into homes.
Join us in rewriting the future for Australia’s working dogs—one rescue, one ride, and one wagging tail at a time.”
