Organisation Summary

batyr is a youth-led mental health organisation pioneering preventative approaches through peer-to-peer education and lived experience storytelling. We create safe, stigma-free spaces where young people feel empowered to prioritise their mental health, seek support early, and build resilience within their communities. Recognised globally for our innovative and evidence-based programs, batyr partners with schools, universities, and communities to intervene before mental health challenges escalate.

Our mission is to ensure young people lead mentally healthy, fulfilling lives. With two in five young people experiencing a mental health condition—and less than half seeking help—early intervention is more critical than ever. Suicide remains the leading cause of death among young Australians aged 15 to 24, underscoring the urgency of our work.

Since 2011, batyr has reached 440,000+ young people and trained over 1,300 to safely share their lived experiences. Delivered in schools, our programs reach young people during a formative stage. batyr@school engages students aged 14 to 18, equipping them with practical tools and encouraging open conversations that reduce stigma and build mental health literacy. These programs are now expanding to include Years 7–8, addressing the increasing need for earlier intervention.

Our batyr@uni programs support young adults aged 18 to 30, bridging a vital gap during major life transitions like starting university or entering the workforce. Our Being Herd workshops support young people with lived experience of mental ill-health or suicidality, helping them reframe their experiences as strengths and build connection, purpose, and protective factors to support ongoing wellbeing.
