Organisation Summary

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Australia (BBBS) supports young people facing adversity by connecting them with a consistent, trusted adult mentor — someone in their corner during important years of growth and development.

Many young people referred to BBBS are navigating challenges such as family violence, social isolation, mental health concerns, cultural barriers, or disengagement from school and community. At a time when positive relationships matter most, mentoring provides stability, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.

What makes Big Brothers Big Sisters unique is our focus on long-term, one-to-one mentoring relationships. Each young person is thoughtfully matched with a screened and trained volunteer mentor based on shared interests, personality, and local connection. Matches are professionally supported to ensure relationships are safe, consistent, and meaningful, often lasting well beyond the formal program period of 12 months.

BBBS is part of one of the world’s most established mentoring movements, with more than a century of international experience and extensive global research demonstrating that mentoring improves wellbeing, confidence, education engagement, and long-term life outcomes for young people facing disadvantage.

Our current priority is to expand mentor recruitment and program delivery to meet growing demand, particularly in regional and underserved communities. Funding directly supports volunteer screening, training, and ongoing supervision — enabling more young people to access safe, life-changing mentoring relationships.
