Organisation Summary

Bluebird Foundation is a Geelong-based community arts organisation creating, delivering and auspicing arts programs that make a real difference in people’s lives. Bluebird projects are collaborative and needs-based, and are supported by exceptional professional artists who guide, teach and inspire. The organisation promotes and supports all artforms, and seeks to promote social equity through the transformative power of art. The Djilang Cultural Film Collective (DCFC) falls under Bluebird’s Key Impact Pillar, Seen and Heard: Strengthening Community Connections through Cultural Creativity

The DCFC project has developed over a number of years, growing out of outreach work conducted in state schools in Corio and North Geelong. Project workers from Bluebird Foundation have fostered strong on-going relationships with the community and developed sophisticated arts processes for ensuring that participants will lead and control projects and authentically author their own stories. A strong social media profile ensures projects engage community audiences and reach new participants.

Project Director Dr Dave Kelman has worked with new migrant and refugee communities across Melbourne’s west for over 25 years working with Footscray Community Arts Centre and Western Edge Youth Arts. He has a strong track-record of delivering projects that produce authentic, culturally diverse young people’s stories for community audiences and has published research on using the arts to build social inclusion and combat race-based discrimination.
