Why girls’ education? For an individual girl, education changes everything. It’s her right, and it unlocks her power to determine who she will become and what she will do with her life. Yet still 95% of girls from the most disadvantaged communities in rural Africa never complete secondary school, a reality that plays out at every stage of their life and is a driving force of poverty and injustice.

This is where CAMFED, the Campaign for Female Education, steps in. Since 1993, CAMFED have supported millions of children across Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana and Kenya to go to school. Now they are on a mission to support millions more and, through partnerships with governments, ensure that education systems better serve the needs of all children.

CAMFED’s work is recognised as one of the boldest solutions for tackling the biggest challenges of our time, and it all starts with supporting a girl to go to school, providing her with the financial and material support she needs, and building a nurturing social support network around her.

Central to this support network is the CAMFED Association, Africa’s largest network of young women leaders, formed by CAMFED alumnae who are today at the forefront of their work, leading programme development and implementation in communities across Africa. Founded in 1998, this peer-support, mentorship, and leadership movement connects women who have navigated poverty to champion girls’ education, economic development, and community transformation.
