CICADA Queensland is a completely independent not-for-profit organisation and support group, registered as a charity in Australia. We are run entirely by volunteers – the vast majority of whom are hearing impaired – and are committed to embracing people from all walks of life, supporting and informing them throughout their hearing loss journey.
Hearing loss can and does affect social, emotional and even physical, well-being. This includes a higher risk of low self-esteem, low confidence, depression, relationship challenges, social isolation and a host of other avoidable impacts. Cicada Queensland aims to support all severely and profoundly deaf people across Queensland and inform them of these dangers and of the ways and means to counter and avoid them, including electronic devices. We are also very active in supporting those in the rehabilitation phase of cochlear implants. This is a lengthy and often traumatic process over the two or three years following implant surgery while the brain adjusts to the new type of electronic input.
