The Darling Downs Environment Council (DDEC) is the leading environmental advocacy group for inland Southern Regional Queensland. Since 2014, we have worked with over 20 member groups to protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and agricultural sustainability. As the regional branch of the Queensland Conservation Council, we represent community concerns to government agencies, policymakers, and the public, ensuring the voice of the Darling Downs is heard.
Our mission is to unite community voices for a thriving environment, ensuring the Darling Downs remains liveable, productive, and ecologically healthy. However, unsustainable mining, land degradation, and water mismanagement threaten the region’s fertile farmland, groundwater reserves, and fragile ecosystems, including koalas and wedge-tailed eagles. Climate change is already impacting the region through longer droughts, extreme heat, and worsening bushfires. Without urgent action, we risk severe water shortages, natural disasters, and irreversible environmental damage.
DDEC combats these threats through scientific research, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization. We have successfully prevented the exploitation of Redwood Forest Park, advocated for stronger climate policies, and held polluters accountable. Working with local communities, First Nations peoples, and experts, we address critical issues such as water security, wildlife conservation, and climate resilience.
Priorities:
– Strengthening regulations for mining and energy projects to protect biodiversity and farmland.
– Advocating for local government protections for significant trees.
– Pushing for canopy coverage goals in urban areas.
– Expanding the Koala Strategy to include the Toowoomba region.
Funding DDEC helps secure a sustainable future for the Darling Downs.
